Managed by the Asia Foundation’s office in Bangkok, programmes in Laos focus on combating trafficking of women and children, and ensuring the legal rights of women. The Foundation is assisting the Lao Women's Union (LWU) to reconcile domestic laws with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In addition, with training provided by the Foundation, the Lao Women’s Union—a mass-based national women’s organisation—provided the first-ever legal education program for women. The Foundation also continues to support the Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Union (LPRYU) to videotape and broadcast their street drama series in four provinces that have high rates of migration. The videos educate the public on safe migration and prevention of human trafficking. In 2003, Lao partners also took part in the Foundation’s regional workshop, at which NGO representatives from across Asia exchanged lessons learned on effective strategies to protect the rights of trafficked victims and to prosecute traffickers. The programmes of the Asia Foundation in Laos have been carried out with support from the US Agency for International Development.
