Located approximately six kilometres south of the provincial capital of Thakhek on the road to Savannakhet, That Sikhottabong is one of the most important religious sites in Laos. It comprises three separate stupas, believed to have been built originally during the 6th century. The structures are pumpkin-shaped in accordance with the animist beliefs of that period. During the reign of King Setthathirat the stupas were reconstructed to make them more compatible with Buddhism and a Buddhist wat was built in the same compound. The opening of the new complex in February 1568 is still celebrated today in the three-day That Sikhottabong Festival, which features a wide range of games, competitions and performances by local artists and arts groups.
