All trades unions and workers' organisations in Laos are registered with this mass organisation, which is the national legal labour organisation in Laos. The stated objectives of the LFTU are to mobilise solidarity, develop democracy, promote the various professions and work towards social equality. Its functions include (i) mobilising workers and labouring people to become members of a trade union, organising workers' training programmes, propagating understanding of politics, obeying the laws and regulations, implementing labour contracts, fulfilling their obligations as citizens and developing workers' rights and democracy under the law; (ii) protecting the legitimate rights and interests of trade unionists, workers and labouring people; (iii) monitoring and inspecting the implementation of the policies of the Party and laws and regulations of the state and of other trade union organisations which relate to the rights and interests of the labouring people; (iv) join with state and mass organisations to manage the socio-economic development of the state; and (v) co-operate widely with international trade union organisations, including those of ASEAN. The LFTU is organised at four levels - central, provincial/municipal, district and at grassroots level in various factories.
