OVERVIEW
Publishing (6)Norway is one of the smallest markets for books in Europe. However, Norwegians have access to a great quality selection of fiction and non-fiction works (7,503 books published in 2002 alone). The policy of the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs is to promote general interest in literature for as many people as possible. It does this through exemption of VAT on books, purchasing schemes and an extensive library network. Please see the sections on Literature and Libraries for more details.
The five largest publishing houses are Aschehoug Publishing House, J W Cappelen Publishing House, Gyldendal Publishing House, Schibsted-Forlagene AS (see Schibsted) and N W Damm & Søn AS.
For more information see http://www.forleggerforeningen.no, the website of the Norwegian Publishers Association.
