Röyksopp is probably the most famous and recognisable group to have emerged from Norway's domestic music scene to worldwide acclaim in recent years, Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, collectively Röyksopp, hail from Tromsø. They began recording together in the 1990s on the Apollo label. Their music is best described as ethereal, downbeat electronica. In 1998, after a period of separate projects, they came back together in Bergen and recorded first with Mikal Tellé on his Tellé Records label, and then Wall of Sound. Their debut single Eple single and a second track Poor Leno became widely played chill-out standards. Their 2001 album Melody AM became an instant hit, especially after So Easy was used to advertise a mobile phone company in Europe. Since that time the band has released The Understanding and the live EP Röyksopp's Night Out.
Röyksopp describe their musical style as '...combining the harmonies of film music and classical composers like Erik Satie with melodies like those of Francis Lai.' Their other influences include Norwegian group Biosphere, kitsch 1970s and 1980s pop and (inevitably) Burt Bacharach. They tour and play live internationally - past appearances include the UK's V festival and The Big Chill.
