Magnet (aka Even Johansen) got his name after he was treated for anaemia at the age of 13 by a half-Chinese, half-Indian medicine man, who gave him a tattoo of a magnet, coloured with 'special' ink and was cured: 'I was stupid enough to believe it, but believing can work wonders. To this day, I have not suffered [from anaemia] once. I am a magnet.'

He released Quiet and Still in 2000. In recent years he has won success in the UK, and names his influences as Gram Parsons and the seminal Air. His 2003 release On Your Side received a nomination for 'best new alternative album' at 2003’s Alarm Awards. Recent album releases include The Tourniquet (2005) and The Simple Life (2007).
