Ny Musikk is the Norwegian section of the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) and works to promote contemporary music in Norway and Norwegian contemporary music abroad. Furthermore, Ny Musikk assists musicians and composers in Norway by providing practical, financial and professional support. The organisation, which is run by composers and performers, was founded in 1938, achieving national status in 1970. Among its many tasks, Ny Musikk provides information about contemporary music for the culturally orientated community at large, and is active as a representative for contemporary music in Norway. Membership is open to all with an interest in contemporary music.

Ny Musikk arranges concerts, festivals ('Happy Days' is the biggest), seminars and other activities throughout the country, often collaborating with local branches and other organisations or institutions.

The organisation's administration is based in Oslo, led by Kristin Danielsen, Executive Director. Lars Petter Hagen is the Artistic Director.

Ny Musikk manages the Cikada ensemble, which was established in 1989, and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture through Ny Musikk. The ensemble was awarded a promotional grant in 1996 by The Norwegian Cassette Levy Fund. Cikada was founded with the goal of performing music by the composers of our times. Concerts have been held throughout Europe, in Mexico and the US. Cikada has collaborated with composers such as Magnus Lindberg, Tristan Murail, Tan Dun, James Dillon, Bent Sørensen, Rolf Wallin, Asbjorn Schaathun, George Crumb, Alejandro Vino and Richard Barrett. Cikada performs in various constellations, including full ensemble (tutti),string quartet, trio (voice, percussion, piano) and duo (percussion, piano).

The New Music Composers' Group is an organisation for younger, unestablished composers. Activities include arranging concerts to present musicians, ensembles and commissioned works, and participation in festivals and related artistic projects with Norwegian and international composers.

Albedo, Ny Musikk's record label, releases CDs of contemporary music. The series to date includes recordings by Cikada, the New Music Composers' Group, K4, Hilde Torgersen/Kenneth Karlsson, Knut Vaage, Siri Torjesen, JKL, and Wonderphone .
