 Established in 1996, the West Norwegian Opera is the regional opera company for the western part of Norway, which covers the city of Bergen and Hordaland County. It is officially supported by Hordaland County Council, Bergen Municipality, Bergen Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs.The main aim of the company is to develop music theatre into an independent art form for as wide an audience as possible and to sustain engagements for freelance artists and ensembles, giving Norwegian artists more opportunities to work in their own country. The company produces up to five productions annually in collaboration with Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Theatre, Bergen and international opera companies or festivals. Most performances are staged in the Grieghallen, in the centre of Bergen City. West Norwegian Opera presents between five and seven performances per year.
