A ground-breaking Scottish theatre company created in 1973 by playwright and director John McGrath (1935-2002). Funded by Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Arts Council, it derives its name from an article in The Economist in 1966 which stated that seven per cent of the population of Great Britain owned 84 per cent of the capital wealth. Its work could be loosely described as 'political', although the main aim of McGrath was to prove that 'there [was] a working class audience for theatre in Britain which makes demands, and which has values, which are different from those enshrined in our idealised middle-class audience.' Its past productions have been wide ranging from the Greek Classics to Dario Fo and Frank McGuinness. It also undertakes outreach work such as Right Here Right Now!, a six-month project on the subject of youth offending. |
