There has been a theatre on this site for over 100 years, but the present Festival Theatre was virtually rebuilt during the 1990s and opened in its current incarnation in 1994. The theatre is said to be haunted by the ghost of the 'Great Lafayette', who died when part of the Empire Palace Theatre, which stood on the current site, burned down in 1911. Modern facilities include a licensed bar, café and private function suites.
