There has been a theatre on this site for over 100 years, but the present Festival Theatre was virtually rebuilt during the 1990s and opened in its current incarnation in 1994. The theatre is said to be haunted by the ghost of the 'Great Lafayette', who died when part of the Empire Palace Theatre, which stood on the current site, burned down in 1911. Modern facilities include a licensed bar, café and private function suites.

Stage equipment: Genie aerial platform, upright and grand pianos, SM desk at rear of dress circle, DSL or DSR, cue lights, 20 outstations, intercom to all technical areas, show relay to dressing rooms
Backstage: 5 principal dressing rooms for 1 or 2 persons, 2 group dressing rooms for 4 persons, 2 group dressing rooms for 8 persons, 4 chorus rooms for up to 16 persons each, green room, conductor's room, 3 band rooms, wardrobe and laundry, prop worshop and armoury; technical staff include 4 stage/electrics, casuals available, most backstage facilities accessible to disabled performers and staff
