OVERVIEW:
Puppetry

Ljubljana Puppet Theatre in co-operation with SNG OpePuppetry in Slovenia is not only extremely popular, but also generally of a very high quality. There are two public puppet theatre institutions: the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and the Maribor Puppet Theatre, which between them stage about 15 premieres a year with an average of 73,329 spectators. They also organise festivals, namely the biennial Lutke International Puppet Festival in Ljubljana and the Summer Pier International Puppetry Festival, Maribor in Maribor. On the Coast the Koper Theatre hosts the Slovene Puppetry Biennial organised by Puppetry Creators Institute (ULU). Mini Theatre organises the Mini Summer - International Festival for Children at Ljubljana Castle. It extends its activities beyond children's theatre production to international independent theatre co-productions.
Slovenia has over 20 puppetry theatre groups which perform high-quality performances for both children and adults at major venues such as KUD France Prešeren Arts and Culture Association and Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre, as well as touring to regional theatres and local cultural centres. There is also a network of almost 190 amateur puppetry groups. Several Slovene puppeteers are active members of the International Union of the Marionette (UNIMA), Slovenia.
The most established names in Slovene puppetry are Silvan Omerzu of Konj Puppet Theatre, Edi Majaron of Freyer Theatre Ljubljana, Jelena Sitar and Igor Cvetko of Zapik Theatre, Irena Rajh of Fru Fru Puppet Theatre and Saša Jovanovič, and Barbara Bulatovič. Among young authors Matija Solce and his Teatro matita should be mentioned.
