OVERVIEW:
Performing arts training
Theatre and dance education
Akademija za gledališce, radio, film in televizijo (AGRFT)One Slovene secondary school - Nova Gorica Grammar School - currently offers an Art Grammar School (umetniška gimnazija) programme specialising in drama. At tertiary level, training for theatre, film and broadcasting is offered by the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT), which was founded shortly after World War II. It provides studies for actors, directors, dramaturgs, scenographers and costumographers, but as yet there is no study programme for playwrights or screenwriters.
In the non-profit sector the Maska Institute runs the Maska Symposium, a seminar on contemporary performing arts comprising lectures and workshops. The Bunker Institute also runs a vocational training programme called Medana Education as part of a residency at Medana (cf Days of Poetry and Wine Medana) as well as vocational training in performing arts education at the Stara Elektrarna - Old Power Station in Ljubljana. The new KUD Integral has organised several PreGlej drama reading sessions at the Glej Theatre. Ana Monró Theatre runs an international training programme and symposium on street theatre within the Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival, while the Vitkar Institute organises vocational training in contemporary circus theatre.
Ballet dancers are educated at the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Secondary School and at the Maribor Music and Ballet Secondary School. Although education in contemporary dance has become part of the public school network, Slovenia still lacks proper infrastructure to provide appropriate working and training conditions for dancers and choreographers. Contemporary dance is taught at only one secondary school - the Pre-School Education and Grammar School, Ljubljana; launched in 1999, that programme developed directly out of the non-governmental performing arts organisations where Maja Delak created her choreographies (En-Knap Dance Group and later Emanat, Dance Production and Education). Before this contemporary dance could be learned only at workshops by guest choreographers and dancers, or at schools abroad.
Slovenia currently has no tertiary-level dance training programmes. However, non-formal training programmes in contemporary dance are run by Ljubljana Dance Theatre (PTL), Plesna izba - Maribor Dance Room and Pekarna Magdalena Network in Maribor, while for youth there is the Dance Programme, Public Fund for Cultural Activities. In 2003 En-Knap Dance Group launched a vocational training programme called Agon (now run by by Emanat, Dance Production and Education). More recently the EU project Cultural Intersections, Mobility, Education and Training (CIMET), led by En-Knap, has fused the international contemporary dance educational programmes of Austria, Croatia, Italy, Serbia and Slovenia.
Music education
The secondary schools which offer an Art Grammar School (umetniška gimnazija) programme specialising in music are Koper Grammar School - Ginnasio Capodistria and Velenje Grammar School, while Ljubljana Music and Ballet Secondary School and Maribor Music and Ballet Secondary School also offer music as well as a dance (ballet) programme.
After completing their secondary education, talented music students can pursue further studies at the lamentably small Academy of Music. Those who would like to teach music can study at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor, while those interested in musicology can study at the Department of Musicology, University of Ljubljana. The Musicology Department organises symposia and lectures, and collaborates with Folk Slovenia Cultural Society in organising various workshops. Additional educational programmes in the field of music are also offered regularly by some private non-governmental organisations, including the Centre for Music Education Koper, the GIS Muzikaviva Music School and Ljubljana Musical Youth. Jazz music workshops are offered annually within the JAZZINTY International Music Workshop and Festival, Novo mesto, while contemporary vocal music is taught by Carmina Slovenica. For Slovene musicians and vocalists the need for international co-operation in education is also of utmost importance.
