Seminary Library in LjubljanaIn addition to the development, educational and research centres based at the National and University Library (NUK), the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies, University of Ljubljana offers both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the field of librarianship. The National Council for Library Activities is an inter-ministerial body which sets standards and gives opinions on professional documents and on the annual plans and reports of NUK and the Institute of Information Sciences (IZUM). There are eight regional library associations, over which the Union of Associations of Slovene Librarians works through seven professional sectors and seven commissions, enhancing the development of different professional fields. Each year it organises a professional conference on a specific subject at which foreign experts are invited to present papers. It also presents national awards and publishes the quarterly Knjižnica (Library) Magazine. Since 1990 Slovenia’s public libraries have developed their own public library associations, which solve mutual problems in library management and organise various forms of training.
