International awards for Slovene literature
Currently under construction, this section will provide a list of most important international awards that have been won by several Slovene literary figures in recent years.

Most recently in December 2005 the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Art was conferred on Drago Jančar for his achievements in the field of literature and for promoting Austrian-Slovene ties. Jančar, born in 1948 in Maribor, is a widely-translated fiction writer, playwright and essayist. He has received a number of literary and arts awards in Slovenia and abroad, including the Prešeren Award for literature, three Grum Awards for drama, three Rožanc Awards for essays, two Kresnik Awards for novels, and the European Award for short prose. Jančar has moreover made it to the big screen, as his novel
Zvenenje v glavi ('Headnoise'), a portrayal of a prison uprising, was brought to the cinemas by Slovene director Andrej Košak in 2002 (see
Novi val - New Wave Košak). His novel 'Northern Lights', a major literary work about Maribor, was staged by the
Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Maribor in its 2005-6 season. His novels 'Northern Lights' and 'Mocking Desire' have also been published in English.
