OVERVIEW
delo newspaperSlovenia currently has six daily newspapers with a total circulation of about 350,000. These are Delo (read in 2006 by 203,000 people each day, which gives it a 11.9 per cent daily reach), Dnevnik, Večer, Finance, the tabloid Slovenske novice and the sports daily Ekipa.
Delo's cultural pages are an important reference point for daily cultural reviews, articles and interviews, and its Saturday supplement features interesting articles and interviews. Delo also incorporates the daily Deloskop section which includes cultural event listings covering all Slovene regions and presentations of current events. The cultural pages of Večer feature reviews, interviews and the weekly Architectural Word and Reading Room (literature) supplements. Dnevnik is also another important media outlet for the communication of cultural events.
Slovenia's 45 weeklies and regional newspapers have a combined circulation of 1.6 million. Among the weeklies, Nedeljski dnevnik is widely read (31 per cent), while the weeklies Mladina (5.1 per cent) and Mag (3.7 per cent) shape many people’s opinions. Importantly, Mladina gives extensive coverage to culture, focusing mostly on non-institutional cultural production, events and clubbing, and featuring interviews and reports of significant international cultural events. Regional newspapers that cover local cultural events include Primorske novice in the Coastal region and Goriška, Gorenjski glas in the Gorenjska region, Novi list in the Savinjska region, Dolenjski list in the South-East Slovenia region and Vestnik Murska Sobota in the Pomurje region.
A total of 183 academic and professional journals are currently published in Slovenia. There are also 33 cultural magazines, mainly monthlies, with a combined total circulation of around 80,000, as well as eight foreign language magazines on Slovenia.
The national Slovene Press Agency (STA) was established in 1991 and covers events at home and worldwide using its own, as well as foreign sources; several smaller press agencies are also operational.
