OVERVIEW
Flexographic printing machineProduction of books and serials in Slovenia encompasses all subjects, ranging from philosophy, religion and social sciences to mathematics, applied sciences, arts, linguistics and original Slovene works and translations.
According to the statistics provided by the Chamber of Publishing, Bookselling, Graphic Industry, Radio and TV Media (GZS-ZKGM), total production in 2006 amounted to 4,684 titles, made up of 3,730 books and 954 serials and constituting a 6.6 per cent increase over the 2005 figure of 4,394 titles. In 2006, 1,036 titles of literature were published, constituting a 4.3 per cent increase over the 2005 figure. Of all titles, 493 or 47.6 per cent comprised Slovene literature and 543 or 52.4 per cent foreign literature. As regards the type of literature, most literature books were novels (44.2 per cent of all literature), followed by short stories with 23.3 per cent, poetry with 19.7 per cent, dramas with 2.0 per cent and other with 10.8 per cent.
Being one of the smallest in Europe, the Slovene publishing sector has always found it difficult to fund the production of specialist books and periodicals within the fields of culture and science. The former government of Yugoslavia offered an element of subsidy coupled with the a favourable credit system, purchase of books for libraries and tax exemption, but this was never enough to permit publishing houses to develop properly and publish sufficient titles for the preservation of the national cultural identity, the development of the Slovene language and the advancement of contemporary Slovene literary endeavours and expert knowledge. Since independence Slovene publishing houses have benefited from subventions granted by the Ministry of Culture, which account for some 200 books and 10 magazine titles each year. Meanwhile many have subsidised more specialist titles themselves by re-investing the profits from their best-selling books and magazines.
The oldest publishing houses in Slovenia are Slovenska matica and Mohorjeva družba Celje, while the largest publishing houses are the Mladinska knjiga Publishing House (including Cankarjeva Publishing House Ltd) and DZS, there a a lot of publishing houses that focus on schoolbooks publishing, eg Didakta Publishing House, Modrijan Publishing House or Rokus Klett Publishing House. Among the non-for-profit publishing houses the most rich programmes are offered by the Nova revija Publishing House, and the Študentska založba Publishing House, Ljubljana. Next to these there are quite a few smaller publishers which specialise in literature, including the Literatura Literary Artistic Association, the Sanje ('Dreams') Publishing House, the Centre for Slovene Literature, Apokalipsa Cultural and Artistic Association or the young Šerpa Literary Art Association. There are also a number of publishers which specialise, eg in philosophy (Society for Theoretical Psychoanalysis, Ljubljana), the performing arts (Maska Publishing) or film (UMco).
Numerous publishing houses are active in the regions, including Aristej Publishing House Ltd in Maribor, Goga Publishing House in Novo mesto, Franc-Franc Publishing in Murska Sobota. Some new private publishers have set up attractively designed bookstores, eg Vale-Novak .
A full and detailed overview of the publishing sector in Slovenia will appear here soon. In the meantime make direct contact with organisations and individuals working in this sector through our KEY CONTACTS database.
