OVERVIEW:
Visual arts education
The Secondary School for Design and Photography, Ljubljana runs three visual arts education programmes: Design (graphic design, industrial design and fashion design), Photography, and the Art Grammar School (umetniška gimnazija) programme of classic grammar school subjects together with additional visual arts subjects including architecture. Other secondary schools offering an Art Grammar School programme specialising in visual arts include the Celje-Centre Grammar School, Velenje Grammar School, Nova Gorica Grammar School and Koper Grammar School - Ginnasio Capodistria.
Formal tertiary education in visual arts is provided by the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, which offers a range of subjects including Painting, Sculpture, Video, Visual Communication Design, Industrial Design and Restoration in Ljubljana. In addition to this, students of the Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana and the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor are trained to teach visual arts at primary or secondary schools. In years gone by most visual arts teachers at Slovene primary and secondary schools were painting or sculpture graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts who had taken a special exam in pedagogics, but today they comprise mainly Faculty of Education graduates who have specialised in visual arts education.
Several NGOs also engage in visual arts education.
SCCA-Ljubljana Centre for Contemporary Arts has initiated several education projects within the World of Art: School for Contemporary Arts project(a curatorial school and curator training, a writing seminar).
Famul Stuart School of Applied Arts offers two-year courses in Graphics (art-printing techniques), Ceramics, Sculpture, Restoration, Photography, Digital Media and Ambient-Interior Decorating and Furnishing.
Strip Core, Forum Ljubljana organises highly acclaimed educational workshops in comic art, usually organised at public cultural institutions such as the International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana and Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, at museums such as the Slovene Ethnographic Museum or within festivals.
Emzin Cultural Institute organises educational seminars on graphic design and photography featuring acknowledged Slovene and international lecturers.
LokalPatriot, Novo Mesto organises Fotopub - Documentary Photography Festival and also offers a photography school featuring renowned lecturers and tutors.
Arthouse - College for Visual Arts is private school with the status of a specialised higher education institution, which offers a four-year programme as well as special shorter preparation courses for the Academy of Fine Arts and Design entry exams.
The Slovene Society of Aesthetics also organises thematic Spring colloquia for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
