OVERVIEW:
Literature education
Literature education is one of the most important parts of the primary and secondary school curriculum. At tertiary level those who would like to engage in professions relating to literature study mainly at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana (Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory, Department of Slavonic Languages and Literature and Department of Slovene Languages and Literature) or at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor (Slavic Languages and Literatures, Translation Science). Students of Dramaturgy are able to undertake in-depth study of drama literature at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT).
Creative writing courses have been organised by Slovene Writers’ Association, Centre for Slovene Literature, Študentska založba Publishing House, Ljubljana, and also by MKC Maribor Youth Culture Centre, however education in this field can also be obtained at several festivals and readings.
Reading culture is an important issue in Slovenia, and the Reading Badge of Slovenia Association is an important agent at primary school level. For several years the Ministry of Culture has funded around 14 selected bookstores to organise readings and non-commercial literature/humanities books presentations.
