Established in 1950, the Association of Slovene Filmmakers currently has around 180 members. The Association played an important role as a founder of Viba Film Studio, the Slovene Film Museum (now part of the Slovenian Cinematheque) and the Week of Slovene Film (now the Festival of Slovene Film).
The Association gives annual grants to prospective and established film makers. Since 2004 the Association has offered working stipends purchased out of the National Library compensation scheme.
The Association appoints representatives to the Council of Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia) and the Boards of the Slovene Film Fund, the Slovenian Cinematheque, Viba Film Studio and the Glosa Syndicate.
The Association’s members participate in expert juries of the Festival of Slovene Film, awarding the annual Metod Badjura Award for lifetime achievement in the field of film. Since 2003 the Association, together with Kolosej Cinematographers, has given the Golden Roll Award to the Slovene film which attracts more than 25,000 viewers into Slovene cinemas. The Association also co-ordinates the selection of national applicants for Academy Awards and gives proposals for the candidate for annual national Prešeren Award and Prešeren Foundation Awards.
The Association of Slovene Filmmakers organises film evenings, film workshops and seminars.
