Staragara was established as a not-for-profit cultural organisation (zavod) in February 2003 by film directors Janez Burger and Jan Cvitkovič. As well as film productions, Staragara also organises and produces dance events.
 As a film production house, Staragara produced Jan Cvitkovič's black comedy Odgrobadogroba ('Gravehopping'), which saw its world premiere in September 2005 at the 53rd International Film Festival in San Sebastian and received the prestigious award Altadis New Directors Award for the best first and second film of a director. The film has won many other prizes (eg in Warsaw, Cottbus, Palić, Torino, Portorož, Khanty Mansysk, and Setubal in Portugal) and more than 20,000 viewers saw the film during regular cinematographic distribution in Slovenia. The film Gravehopping by writer and director Jan Cvitkovič was co-produced by Propeler Film from Zagreb and TV Slovenia and financially supported by the Slovene Film Fund and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. The Association of Slovene Filmmakers selected Gravehopping as the 2005 Slovene candidate for the Foreign Language Film Oscar award (announced by Association of Slovene Filmmakers). Cvitkovič is best known for winning the Lion of the Future award at the 2001 Venice Film Festival for his debut feature Kruh in mleko ('Bread and Milk'). Other film projects currently in development are Cirkus Fantastikus (Media Plus support), Driving School and Block of Flats.
Staragara also produces dance. In 2003 it produced an evening of four Polish dance performances called 'The Polish Invasion' at Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in Ljubljana. In the following year dancer Magdalena Reiter of Staragara worked on an international co-production of the dance performance MOMENT.
