Folk MusicThe Folk Slovenia Cultural Society is a society which seeks to bring together those who care about the future of folk music and folk songs in Slovenia. The crucial objective of its activities is to familiarise the public with various ways of experiencing traditional music and song in a modern context, while enhancing public awareness of these values. In addition to annual and other occasional concerts and events, the Society also organises workshops, panel discussions and lectures at which it informs the broadest public on the possibilities of adapting traditional music, song and dance to the spirit of the present times. It is also engaged in the publication of music records and other material to document its own activities and the work of its members, both groups and individuals.
To date the Folk Slovenia Cultural Society has published two CD-compilations, Modern Folk Music in Slovenia I and Modern Folk Music in Slovenia II. Some musicians are loyal to the characteristics of their region of origin (such as, for example, Kurja koža from Styria, La Zonta from Northern Istria, Marko banda from Prekmurje, Tomaž Podobnikar from Carniola and Ljoba Jenče from the Notranjska region), whilst other musicians draw inspiration from other parts of Slovenia, eg Tolovaj Mataj, who gains his inspiration from Rezija, Istria, Carniola and Bela Krajina, and the female vocal group Katice, who are inspired by folk music from Rezija and Porabje. Other musicians featured are Bogdana Herman, Istrianski Mužikanti and Trutamora Slovenica.
More information in English on Bogdana Herman, Ljoba Jenče, Katice, Kurja koža, Tomaž Podobnikar and Tolovaj Mataj is available at the Society's website.
