In 1999 and 2000, following the restructuring of the Soros Foundation, all Soros Centres for Contemporary Arts started to become independent. All have since been transformed into non-governmental organisations under the membership of the new association i-CAN (International Contemporary Art Network), based in Amsterdam. i-CAN's mission is to be an open platform for cross-cultural exchange and collaboration in the field of contemporary art, involving artists, critics, curators and other art professionals and institutions from Central and Eastern Europe. The i-CAN website brings the latest news on events and publications produced or recommended by its members from Sarajevo, Sofia, Zagreb, Prague, Tallinn, Budapest, Almaty, Riga, Vilnius, Skopje, Chisinau, Warsaw, Bucharest, St Petersburg, Bratislava, Ljubljana, Odessa, Kiev, Belgrade, Amsterdam, and Kumamoto. The i-CAN Reader is an online compilation of theoretical and critical texts on contemporary arts from Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. i-CAN's objectives are: to foster the exchange of information, both amongst i-CAN members and internationally; to participate actively in international contemporary art discourse; to promote contemporary art from the CEE region (by means of both internal and international exchange of information, by initiating and realising international art projects and by PR action); and to provide professional advocacy for i-CAN members and utilise the joint strength of the network in influencing local and international cultural policy (co-operating with international contemporary arts institutions, making an inventory and taking care of the arising needs of i-CAN members, approaching policy makers and representing the interests of i-CAN members and contemporary CEE arts).
