The Novo mesto regional office of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia is responsible for cultural heritage in the territory of 11 municipalities, where 25 cultural monuments declared of high importance by the state are located, among them the Church in Novo Mesto, Brežice Castle, the Partisan Baza 20 in Kočevski rog and the Ausperg Ironworks. Recent motorway building works have uncovered a huge archaeologically rich region, and archaeological research is still under way at nine separate sites.
