The Department of Art History offers programmes of study involving Art History as a major subject (with obligatory Latin and German language lessons), plus Art History Education in combination with another subject within the Faculty of Arts with which Art History is closely connected, eg History, Archaeology, Philosophy, Literary History, Sociology or Languages. The difference between the single-major and the double-major programmes is in the extent and level of instruction in specific areas of foreign languages (Latin and German for single-major students), and the teacher-training activities and theoretical knowledge in the area of teaching methodology (for double-major students). Postgraduate (MA and PhD) studies are offered in the following general fields: medieval art (European and Slovene), modern art (European and Slovene), and protection of monuments.
In the first two years the programme consists of introductory courses (general, Slovene Art, Iconography) as well as surveys of European Art (medieval, modern), Slovene Art (medieval, modern) and the Art of Ancient Cultures. In the third and fourth years the programme focuses on seminars and special courses.
The aim of all four programmes is to qualify students for responsible professional work in different fields that involve Art History (museums, institutes for protection of the cultural heritage). The pedagogic orientation includes subjects and practical work which qualify students for teaching Art History in primary and secondary schools (art history, teaching methodology, pedagogic skills, psychology, etc).
