Initially part of the France Marolt Academic Folklore Group, the female vocal group Katice was established in 1992 and comprises Alenka Trampuš Bakija, Anita Gaber Peceli, Barbara Povše Golob, Darinka Borštnik, Karmen Rus, Manica Habjanič Gaberšek, Marjana Cešek, Metka Knific, Naja Zapušek, Nataša Kosmač, Polona Vodiškar Čeh, Tanja Drašler and Tina Trampuš.
Katice sing the traditional songs of all the Slovene regions in a highly original manner; they travel from a melancholic song of the Panonic plain to the extraordinary harmonies of the Rezija region, take a stroll through diverse seasons and ages of life, from joy at birth past a carefree childhood, adolescent puns and marriage, all the way towards death. Their rich vocal repertoire is seasoned by the sounds of a whistle and an earthenware pot-bass. They get accompanied also by a traditional musician and they also dance to their songs.
Their first independent performance was at the international Traditional Singers and Musicians of the Alpine Countries event in Innsbruck, 1992. In 1997 they performed at the Druga Godba Festival, at the Trnfest Festival, Ljubljana, and at the Okarina Folk Festival, Bled, and in 1998 they appeared at the EBU Folk Contemporary Festival in Portorož. They have also performed widely abroad in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Poland, Ireland, Great Britain, Italy and Croatia. Their first CD Katice was nominated twice for the Slovene award Zlati petelin; numerous other recordings have followed.
